Community Involvement

Wilson Transformer Company has provided support to local community activities such as Prizes for University students, Wodonga Football Club, Solar Car Challenge, local business groups such as the Regional Albury Wodonga Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) Group and various ethnic community groups. Here are some of the projects in which we have or are continuing to participate:

ALBURY WODONGA SOLAR CAR CHALLENGE

The Albury Wodonga Solar Car Challenge has been supported since 2004 and continues to be a great success and encourages secondary school students to become involved in mathematics and science. Each year at Wilson Transformer Park, our second site in Wodonga, teams from different schools race their model solar cars which are supported by industry members.

ABORIGINAL YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation, Workways and Wilson Transformer Company pioneered an innovative aboriginal employment project to assist aboriginal youth who could benefit from a work based training program. Participants received a certificate II in metal based engineering upon successful completion.

THE YOUTH INDUSTRY PROJECT

Wilson Transformer Company is one of the industry partners in the Youth to Industry project established by the City of Wodonga and the Wodonga Manufacturing Local Industry Workforce Development Group. The project is aimed to develop better linkage and employment opportunities for young people in the manufacturing sector.

TSUNAMI APPEAL

When the Tsunami occurred in December 2004, Wilson Transformer Company launched a Tsunami Appeal raising donations from employees and the Company. The funds raised were used to reconstruct a two storey school building and purchase a bus for the All Saints College in Galle, Sri Lanka. In May 2015, employees visited the school again to donate sports equipment to the students.

PRIZES FOR MONASH UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Since 1969, the Jack Wilson Prize and the Wilson Transformer Company Prize have been awarded to third and final year students in electrical and computer systems engineering at Monash University who have shown proficiency and initiative in electrical power engineering.

SUPPORTER OF THE AUSTRALIAN POWER INSTITUTE (API)

Along with other leading Australian companies, Wilson Transformer Company participates in the Leadership in a Technological Environment program at Monash University providing engineering students scholarships and opportunity for work experience.

Wilson Transformer Company is one of the platinum partners of the EnGenius Trade Fair at RMIT University which showcases the projects designed and developed by the students in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Since the inception of API, Wilson Transformer Company has been an active supporter and provides vacation employment work experience for engineering students during their summer and winter breaks. Ed Wilson represents the manufacturing sector on the API Board.

ACTIVE MEMBER OF CIGRE

CO-HOST OF THE TECHCON® ASIA-PACIFIC CONFERENCE

Wilson Transformer Company is a corporate member of the Electric Energy Society of Australia (EESA), participates in major conferences and occasionally provides transformer factory tour to members and non-members of the EESA.

Wilson Transformer Company participates in CIGRE activities as a member of Australian Panels, by representation on the Australian National Committee Board, and by attending and displaying at CIGRE conferences.

TechCon® Asia-Pacific is the major conference hosted by Wilson Transformer Company and TJ|H2b Analytical Services every year since 2000. It focuses on innovative approaches to diagnostics and condition based maintenance of high voltage equipment.

 

Employee Development

TRAINING PROGRAMS

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

GRADUATE TRAINING PROGRAM

Wilson Transformer Company place emphasis on the learning & development of employees as part of skills upgrading. We sponsor selected our employees in Professional and Leadership courses such as Supply Chain Management, High Performance Management and for factory and field staff, related courses such as HSE for Design, Regulated Safety Training and Root Cause Analysis.

We sponsor apprentices in various fields such as Engineering, Fabrication Trade and Engineering Mechanical Trade. These are 4-year apprenticeship programmes, during which apprentices attend a TAFE once a week during the first 3 years and subsequently undergoes a full year’s Work Placement within the Company to fulfil all the requirements of the respective qualifications.

We have a 2-year training program for newly graduated engineers who join Wilson Transformer Company in the Power Business Unit. The objective is to give the trainees a comprehensive understanding and extensive experience in Power Transformer Manufacture, Test, Services and Design through a rotation in different departments in Glen Waverley facility.
